When you are browsing the web, you may be opening multiple tabs and it is very annoying when a tab which is in the background starts playing audio suddenly without even it being focused. While you can either completely mute your system volume, it is not convenient to do so and unmute it every time you need to listen to something. While you can mute only the tab playing the audio, you still have to locate it and then mute it. A Chrome extension instead handles this automatically muting all background tabs and keeping the active tab's audio unmuted.
How To Automatically Mute Tab Audio On Tab Switch In Chrome
To disable it temporarily, click on its toolbar button again. You will see as you switch tabs in Chrome after installing it that it handles this audio behavior on-the-fly quite efficiently. Note that although it does mute inactive tabs, it doesn't actually stop the video/audio in those tabs from playing automatically. This shouldn't be a big problem as on websites like YouTube, the media doesn't begin playing unless you have switched at least once to that tab.
Whether the tab is muted (prevented from playing sound). The tab may be muted even if it has not played or is not currently playing sound. Equivalent to whether the 'muted' audio indicator is showing.
When you regularly switch back and forth between headphones (Bluetooth or wired) or a speaker system, your operating system might not switch your audio output automatically. That means that, when you expect sound from your speakers, your OS is trying to output sound from Chrome through another device.
Since last year, Chrome has shown us which tabs are playing audio with the small speaker icon. It wasn't that helpful, since you'd still have to switch over to the tab to mute the auto-playing video or other noise source. Google quietly rolled out a solution to our audio-killing troubles: Now you can mute tabs by right-clicking on them.
The feature can come in handy when you are listening to online radio or a music streaming website and you suddenly find an interesting video you want to watch. Now, instead of opening the music tab, you can directly mute the song for the time being using the audio icon and once you are done with the video, just click on the same icon again to get back to your audio stream.
Autoplay blocking is not applied to elements when the source media does not have an audio track, or if the audio track is muted. Media with an active audio track are considered to be audible, and autoplay blocking applies to them. Inaudible media are not affected by autoplay blocking.
If autoplay is important for your application, you may need to customize behavior based on whether or not autoplay is allowed, disallowed, or only supported for inaudible content. For example, if your application needs to autoplay a video and you know that the page only allows the autoplay of inaudible content, you can either mute it or supply a video with no audio track. Similarly, if you know that autoplay is not allowed at all, you might provide a default image for the video (using the poster attribute), or choose to defer loading the video until it is requested.
The example below shows how you pass the mediaelement string to get the autoplay policy for all media elements in the document (pass audiocontext to get the policy for audio contexts). The code assumes video is an HTMLVideoElement media element using the tag or HTMLVideoElement, and that it is configured to autoplay with audio by default. If autoplay is only allowed for inaudible content, we mute the audio; if autoplay is disallowed, we make sure that a placeholder image is displayed for the video.
A common use case for autoplay is to automatically begin to play a video clip that goes along with an article, an advertisement, or a preview of the page's main functionality. To autoplay videos like these, you have two options: don't have an audio track, or have an audio track but configure the element to mute the audio by default, like this:
This video element is configured to include the user controls (typically play/pause, scrubbing through the video's timeline, volume control, and muting); also, since the muted attribute is included, and the playsinline attribute that is required for autoplay in Safari, the video will autoplay but with the audio muted. The user has the option, however, of re-enabling the audio by clicking on the unmute button in the controls.
A Boolean preference which if true (the default) allows audio media which is currently muted to be automatically played. If this has been changed to false, media with an audio track will not be permitted to play even if muted.
