Perhaps their most fondly remembered title is EV Nova, the third game in the Escape Velocity series. A space exploration and combat game, EV Nova is set amongst warring factions scattered throughout the Milky Way. Consider it Divergent amongst the stars, as you will select your faction then find your role in it.
Software and videogames were once on borrowed time, surviving only as long as the hardware on which they ran. But then systems became powerful enough to successfully mimic those that came before. So began the age of emulation.

In this feature, we explore the current state of emulation on macOS. We begin with how to emulate old Apple hardware such as the Apple II and Macintosh Plus. We then delve into emulating ancient PCs, classic consoles, arcade games, and a few much-loved home computers.
Having started life as a Pac-Man emulator in 1997, MAME has grown into a project that aims to preserve the entirety of arcade game history of the coin-operated variety. A rather nice side effect is being able to play said games if you install MAME.
To load a game from the main menu, double-click it. You can quickly filter the menu, Spotlight-style, by typing the name of a game. Once a game has loaded, 5 inserts a virtual coin (these are, remember, virtual coin-ops), and 1 starts a single-player game. Typically, arrow keys are used for directional control and Mac modifier keys (Command, Option, Control, Shift) for action buttons, but you can examine full controls by pressing Tab in-game and choosing Input (this Machine).
Still listed as the highest-selling single computer model of all-time, the C64 was huge in the 1980s, with a wealth of amazing games, many of which still stand up today. On macOS, you can choose between VirtualC64 and VICE, the former being more Mac-like and the latter more flexible.
Apple fans are used to free gaming for the iPhone and iPad, but tend not to think so much about free games for macOS. This is a shame, because the Mac is a great games platform with plenty of excellent freebies.
The original Counter-Strike was released way back in 2000, and is still available as a paid-for game. The team-based Global Offensive followed in 2012, and was also paid-for, although it switched to free-to-play at the end of 2018, partly as a response to the success of titles such as Fortnite.
Global Offensive has the same anti-terrorist theme as other games in the Counter-Strike series, but focuses on online multiplayer action with two teams competing to achieve their objective, such as defusing a bomb or rescuing a group of hostages. There are several different game modes available, including Casual and Deathmatch, which are the easiest for new players who are just getting started.
While there is a bit of combat (against game monsters or other players), it has a huge amount of crafting where you can build objects and artifacts, and both farm and cook food. This gives it a charm that Tolkien fans will love.
This fast-paced single-screen wraparound platform game finds you scooting along lazily drifting platforms, trying to paint white ones blue. For reasons unknown, the other inhabitants of this neon realm hate your interior design skills and set out to stop you.
A game to set IP lawyers twitching, Pacapong finds two bats facing off, a maze of dots and ghosts between then. The ball is fired into a corridor, whereupon it takes on a famous form and starts munching dots.
Preposterously addictive and blessed with some of the catchiest music in gaming, RotMG is a twin-stick shooter and massively multiplayer (co-operative) RPG that caused massive drops in productivity in the Macworld offices one Christmas. You can play in the browser or download it on Steam; either way the game is free. David Price
The most brutal game in this list, Slime Time finds a little jet-packing CEO trying to cover up a toxic waste crisis. Said executive blasts about, blowing up sewer pipes that spew green goo and lasering creatures that emerge from the toxic pool below.
This strategy game sees you controlling three different races: Terrans, Zerg and the Protoss. Each race has different weapons, craft and abilities (and each feels magnificently different to play). You wage battles against one or two of the other races.
This online roleplaying game puts several players together and keeps them building up their characters. World of Warcraft is one of the greatest computer experiences ever made, and has legions of fans.
Apple sells an external optical USB SuperDrive that will allow you to use your original CDs and DVDs to play games. For quickness, you might want to just use disk images though, which contain all the data found on a CD or DVD as a file stored on your computer.
Virtualization does come with a few drawbacks, however. There have been big leaps forward in terms of virtualized 3D graphics performance over the past few years, but you may still encounter compatibility problems like glitches, poor performance and some games refusing to run.
For that reason VirtualBox is probably best for Windows XP games and those that maintain good compatibility with the Windows 2000-era platform. Think games like Age of Mythology, Call of Duty ,and Medal of Honour: Allied Assault.
As macOS has grown in popularity, Mac versions of games are becoming much more common. This is apparent if you browse through the video game distribution service, Steam. If you get Steam for your Mac, you can buy and download tons of new and classic games and play them right on your Mac with almost no issues.
The choice you make of how to play old Windows and DOS games on your Mac will surely depend on the game in question, the age of your Mac and its hardware, and the operating system the game was initially designed for.
An idea of old games you are considering may help us. Some do well with minimal graphics hardware and other need the power of a PCI or AGP video card. I did a lot of flight sims on pre-Intel Macs (mostly a Beige G3 heavily upgraded) and they can require massive video hardware for best function. Some were very card-specific. I had an F-16 Falcon sim that ran fine on an older 16MB ATI video card that would not work for beans on a newer and more capable card from ATI. It was like the sim was hard-programmed only for certain cards.
I have been reading that a mac that runs MacOS 9.2 natively is best for playing old games using emulators to load the games. All these emulators should be able to run on MacOS 9.2 . So you can play games from System-1 thru MacOS_9.2
There is a pretty major caveat for Mac owners, however. Ever since the release of macOS Catalina in 2019, modern Macs can no longer run 32-bit games, which is why we sadly left classics such as Portal and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis off the list. There are workarounds, as are there for playing Windows-only games on Mac. But for the purposes of this list, we included only games that you can download and play without any knowledge of Parallels, Bootcamp or similar programs.
Wherever you choose to purchase the best Mac games, make sure that the game is Mac-compatible (check for a little Apple symbol), and will work with the version of macOS your computer is running. The system requirements section on a store page will usually provide this information.
There are few things as soothing as a good farming sim, and Stardew Valley set a new standard for the genre when it came out in 2016. Building on the legacy of the farming-themed games that came before (most notably the Harvest Moon series), Stardew Valley adds depth to almost every system: agriculture, animal husbandry, combat, friendship, exploration and more.
Speaking of Maniac Mansion (and when are we not?), its 1993 sequel Day of the Tentacle got the remaster treatment in 2016, bringing one of the funniest, most creative games of all time to modern systems. DOTT was widely regarded as a masterpiece throughout the 90s, and unlike many other games from the era, it holds up wonderfully. Time travel? Sentient tentacles? A plan to enslave humans? Making a time capsule with Thomas Edison? Day of the Tentacle has it all.
Oxenfree is many things: a coming-of-age story, a mystery, a graphic adventure and a weird-as-all-get-out game in general. The indie title from Night School Studio follows a group of teenagers on an overnight island campout, which should alert you to the fact that things are about to go terribly wrong. There are paranormal forces at work on this island, and protagonist Alex needs to uncover its confusing landscape if she wants to have any hope of surviving until morning and making it back to solid land.
Like other games of this nature, Firewatch is extremely narrative-focused, and incorporates themes such as the fear of the unknown, and the loneliness of self-imposed isolation. Its success in storytelling so made it a top pick among critics and players back in 2016, and six years later, its story still resonates.
Now over a decade old, this indie hit remains a sterling example of how minimalism can serve video game design. Not everything has to be over-the-top and explosive. Likewise, not every plot point needs an in-depth explanation. If nothing else, Limbo will make you think, and leave you grasping to understand its hidden meaning.
As companies move away from older consoles and new operating systems render many games unplayable, it becomes harder to play all your favorite games from the past. Game conservation has never been more important, but the industry as a whole has mostly failed here.
Valiant efforts have been made by the Internet Archive and GOG.com(Opens in a new window) to preserve classic arcade(Opens in a new window), console(Opens in a new window), and computer(Opens in a new window) games, but the major game developers could be doing more. As nice as it is to have subscriptions to Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Now, or Nintendo Switch Online, those services can be shut off at any time. Nintendo's shuttering of the Wii's Virtual Console in 2019 is proof that these aren't real solutions. 2ff7e9595c
